Sunrise, steadily getting later in the morning as autumn progressed, peeked through the trees as beams of light showering down from the heavens to caress the ground below. A few birds whistled their morning songs of happiness as Blackwood Forest slowly woke. In time, with the pink light of a new day giving way to the golden brightness of a cloudless sky, Jinx long-stretched, popping several vertebrae in her back as she yawned life into her body. Her mind cloudy and body sore, she cracked her eyes open, blinking several times at the brightness. Her mouth tasted of dirt and raw meat with a lingering flavor of the previous night’s dinner. The sudden realization she was not in her bed shocked her to her feet. Her nudity scared her sense-less; everything went numb. Beginning to hyperventilate, she paced in a circle inspecting the ground, from which she had risen. The patch of dirt and leaves gave her no real indication of where she was. What the hell happened? Just shy of passing out from lack of oxygen, Mayaciel, who she hadn’t seen approaching, caught her up and steadied her on her feet.

“What has happened?” His concerned question flooded her mind. He neither spoke nor signed, but Jinx knew what he was saying. “Are you okay? Has someone hurt you?” As confused as his friend, Mayaciel flexed his muscles and relied heavily on his fairy strength to steady Jinx. He was unsure how he was able to approach her without her noticing him but even more distraught at her nudity.

Rebalancing herself free of Mayaciel’s support, Jinx shrugged before she began erratically signing. Nothing she produced made sense. Her matted, long, red hair was full of leaves and fell freely into her face several times further frustrating her already agitated attempts at communication.

Mayaciel was not a near-native signer, but his skills were stronger than most. “Aiyathu,” which translated from the old language was the word for “calm” echoed in Jinx’ mind.

Her whole body stopped in place, and her arms dropped to her side. Vacant for a moment, her green eyes glassed over as her breathing slowly became normal again.

Mayaciel hated using his powers of persuasion on people, especially those he cared about. It was, in his opinion, stealing their free will. But Jinx was not acting in any normal way, and he could tell if she just regained full use of her faculties again, her frustrations would lessen. “Are you okay?”

“I am not injured.” Jinx, surprised at her own ability to think and speak for herself, signed and mouthed the words simultaneously. “I don’t know what happened.”

Removing his robe, a lighter green than the previous day’s and one adorned less ornately, Mayaciel wrapped it around Jinx. “We must get you home.”

Jinx had never seen Mayaciel dressed in anything less than his full attire, and at the sight of his bare chest, quizzically cocked her right eyebrow. His smooth skin and taught muscles didn’t draw as much attention as the specks of light that glimmered just beneath the surface of his hairless torso.
